14 year old JRT that stop sleeping throught the night

About 3 weeks ago my beloved JRT, Jack started to shake when he would wake up. The first thought is that since he is losing some vision that he couldn't adjust to the dark. Now he isn't shaking just waking up and standing on us and is very very restless. My husband and I can't get any sleep and are extremely tired. Last night I tried walking him extra, 2 miles extra! and he still was restless. He has slept with us since he was a pup and doesn't understand if I try to have him sleep elsewhere. He has always been such an awesome dog! Any ideas?

Thanks!

Cindi

JRT not sleeping through the night

Glad to hear everything is ok. And what a great tip about the Melatonin. I didn't know that could be given to dogs. I'll have to shelve that tip away somewhere in my head in case I need to use it with our dogs in the future.

no sleep

I did take him to the vet after posting this and she did an entire senior work up and everything was great! She said she wished all of her 14 year old dogs had the type of labs mine did. She checked his eyes and said he had some floaters but that it wasn't bad at all. His hearing has definitely gone. She put him on some calming treats that didn't work and then tried him on trazodone which just made him hyper. On Friday she recommended Melatonin and he has done really great on that. I appreciate all of the advice I can get! I love this little guy so much!

Jack Russell not sleeping

So sorry to hear what you and your Jack are going through. Because your Jack is having these unexpected behavior changes combined with his age I would take him into the vet. Any change in behvaior at any age is cause for a vet trip, especially since your Jack seems scared. It could be some kind of issue related to pain due to arthritis/hips or a neurological issue like seizures. Or even stuff secondary to older age - I'm wondering if his anxiety about his eyesight is getting worse and he wakes up very confused at night. Some older dog also get dementia and it's possible your Jack is waking up not knowing where he is and is scared. One of our dogs had dementia and would often wander around the house a lot, bump into things and get scared more often. I thing the vet would be able to rule out other medical issues. Best wishes, let us know how everything goes!
