16 year old Jack Russell

by Donna Perkins
(Crested Butte, Colorado)

My Female Jack Russell (Rowdi) is 16 years and 4 months and 4 days old. She is my world. She has definately slowed down. She can't hear or see very well and sleeps alot. We still go for walks everyday. She is so unpredictable I have to have her on a leash if we go where there are cars. She gets in moods where I can't catch her. She stays just out of reach and runs around me as if to say "catch me if you can". Not sure what she is thinking when she does this. My question is , is there any history of JR's getting senile later in their life?

Sounds like you have done well by Rowdi, 16 is definitely getting up there in age for a dog! It is not uncommon for dogs of that age to lose a little of their mental acuity...but it could just be more that she has lost hearing and vision and she is approaching her world differently. Maybe she is testing the waters by running away from you and she may not realize the danger that lies in her path. Do keep her on leash when you go out just like you have been doing and continue to enjoy your time with her.
