Male Jacks and marking
by: Anonymous

I had/have this very same issue with Leroy. He seems to have areas that he just has to mark as his. The fix for me was to use baby gates between the kitchen and living room(where he likes to mark.) If it is possible install a dog door asap and as soon as you wake up in the morning(dont wait to do your buisness if your a male) take him straight outside and sit there until he uses the restroom, reward him then while he is out of your sight and you are in shower etc getting ready for the day, confine him to a non-carpeted room perferably with the dog door and the baby gates blocking off doorways. If this still does not work use the kennel method and slowly work to this. Males are very hard to break of this habit and love to mark in carpeted areas because of its absorbancy. Good luck and maintain patience!

If your dog has not been neutered yet, I would strongly recommend neutering. It sounds like your dog is "marking" which is a male territorial habit. Neutering is known to markedly reduce marking :). In addition , be sure to reward your dog for urinating where you want. I use BilJac little bites. mashing them and giving them in the mouth slowly requiring the fur baby to savor without biting. Be sure to clean and remove the smell from the places where he has marked, and do not give him access to those places again. When he raises his leg to P, in the wrong place say "ahhh NO . Fido PP's on paper. or wherever.. Paddy is trained to paper, and it is great.
The key is to refocus to what it is you want. These dogs, want to please. Stay positive with him! and Good luck!
P.S. You might consider the can correction.. Place pennies in a soda can cover the opening with tape. The second you see the dog, raising the leg, SHAKE THE CAN as hard as you can. I wouldn't do this as a first resort and as soon as you have his attention refocus POSITIVE!
