9yr old jack russell with a new kitten

Hello we bought our daughter a new kitten for christmas and our 9 yr old jack russell is not liking the kitten at all. We have kept the kitten in our daughters bedroom and only brought it out while holding it and have a muzzle on the dog along with him on a leash and he still wants to kill the kitten. How do we get him to accept the new kitten into our family ? thank you

Our Jack is 3 and has been with us for a year. Our kids rescued a kitten this summer who needed lots of care and nutrition. We did the same thing, kept the kitten in our son's room and only let them sniff each other with close supervision for brief bits of time. Maizie, our jack, had already learned to respect two older (old!) cats in our home, so maybe that has helped? She was afriad of the kitten initially, backing away from him. It has taken time and lots of supervision but they have actually become pretty good friends. They rough house in a way that either one can't do with another else in the house (old kitties will have nothing of it!). My thought is that you reward your dog for being calm in the presence of the kitten, giving it lots of praise and attention and treats when kitty is near. If dog has a very strong prey drive this may be difficult and require the short-term help of a trainer or behaviorist to help you determine the best set of strategies for everyone's safety. Good luck!

9 year old jack

Well congrats on the kitten first off but I'll tell you I have a 7 year old cat and a 15 month old Jack and things have not gone the way I had hoped. I heard it's better to own a cat and then get a dog for best results in them getting along. However, I know others have done it the other way around. I can't offer you advice as my two pets are not integrating what so ever. Jack will bark and want to chase April (my cat) when he sees her. Basically she's up in the bedrooms and he's not allowed and he was sneaking up so we had to resort to a gate.

Try picking up your jack and talking gently about the kitty and see if that works, maybe after time your dog will accept her. Good luck.
