Ball obsession - oral fixation

Hey everyone,

I have an 8 month old female jrt named clover. She is well behaved in almost all instances but has an absolute obsession with fetch. She wil throw the ball at our feet for hours on end if we dont throw it. She wont stop playing fetch no matter how tired she gets. If we take the ball from her she goes into a morbid depression until she gets it back.... im talking days of pining for it. If we take the ball away she then obsesses on chewing a rubber kong toy we have untill its made her drool so much her mouth issoaked, even her paws get drenched in slobber. Im at my wits end... she is either driving us CRAZY with the ball or miserable.... can anyone help??

Ball crazy pup
by: Brigitte

My JRTS love playing fetch with balls also, but I always begin the game and end it. I dont leave any toys out except their nyla bones to chew on. You didn't mention if you are regularly exercising your pup that might help. My dogs(one is 10 mths) walk everyday and also go on the treadmill to help burn off energy. I have two cats and when the dogs begin to chase I know I have to amp up their exercise. Do you do any obiedence work with your pup? Getting them to use their minds is a great way to tire them out! good luck!

Jacks and playing ball
by: Anonymous

Hi, we have a 1-1/2 year old Jack. Second one. As you know they are bred to have a lot of energy. My Jack loves ball too, but when she starts getting "bity" I know that this play is just not enough. We are blessed to have a person that will take her for a day of doggy day care that cares for other dogs as well. They play, play, play. My vet says that it is very important to socialize Jacks as well. 2 birds with one ball. Cost us $15.00/ 8 hour day care. No training, just play, play, play. She is then good for about two weeks. Then it's back to Tina, our God sent. Good Luck.

Ball Obsession
by: Debbie

I have a 4 yr old Jack Russell Rat Terrier mix and she too loves to play ball for hours on end. She doesn't get depressed when we take it away from her, she does however pout for awhile until we start loving on her and talking to her. We love Haley to death and are so happy we rescued her from the Shelter, we have had her for almost 2 yrs now.

Balls
by: Deborah

I know exactly what you mean I also have a JRT Elvis he is almost 6 years old and he carries his ball in his mouth 24/7 and I taught him if I say please Thank you he will roll the ball to me and will do it constantly and this can go on for hurs on end :)
But he does not get depressed if we stop playing with him he gets alittle upset and starts talking to us like growling and barking at a high pitch but if we ignore him he will go lay down somewhere until he thinks it is time to play again try to stop playing with him and see what he does and he will get the message sooner or later but there are alot of JRT,s out there that are the same way.I also have another JRT another boy named Pache and he never plays with a ball just sometimes for alittle bit but nothing like Elvis LOL
gOOD lUCK PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES HERE is my email address debwhite4@verizon.net
