Electronic Training Collar

My wife and I just rescued a 1 year old JRT. Our first choice was a much bigger dog but when we saw him we had to have him. We live in the country (Vermont) and we have a population of groundhogs that become very active in the springtime. Our driveway is very steep and had to be built up with hugh rocks, which creates perfect burrows. My biggest concern now is that Benny will go into the burrow between the rocks chasing a groundhog and will not be able to get out, we would not be able to dig him out because of the large rocks supporting the driveway. Should we use an electronic training collar to set our dogs boundary areas, making the burrows off limits. We love this dog very much and would hate to have this situation happen to him. Thanks

VT. JRTS

That could be a problem for your girl. You said you just adopted your jrt,how long has it been? I adopted my first jrt at a year old also, and spent several months just setting ground work rules(house rules etc.) then basic obedience,on a long line.It takes time to establish a relationship with your dog. Once thats going well an electric fence is a great idea. Then an e.collar if needed. I live in Vermont as well and manage my jrts so they can get digging time running time and on and off leash walks. I also bike with them and put them on the treadmill when needed. They are such great dogs! Good luck abd enjoy her!!

Electric Collar
by: Anonymous

Hi,
Just wanted to say - that my little JPR was a nightmare when younger - and eventually walking free became an impossibility. She would disappear down rabbit holes - and drains - and once we had moved to France - coypou nests. This was extremely dangerous - as the issues with collapsing earth was significant. She buried herself six foot under a Tree by the Garonne River in flood - stayed there for a full day. I did manage to retrieve her - after using ropes etc. So, after such a difficult situation I finally invested in the electric collar - after a week of training in the garden we went off lead. Life has now changed significantly - she is free on walks now and can run to her hearts content! At home she is happier as she can run off all that energy. I bought a petsafe collar - and it is a very rare day when I have to use anything other than the beep. I then purchased the electric fencing for the house - all fantastic. She is safe and a pleasure to walk, I can't recommend it enough. Hope it goes well.
