Eye Problems

by Teresa

Hello, My dog, Mango, has an issue with one of her eyes. She constantly blinks it as if she has something in it. I've taken her to the vet and they said that she has chronic dry eye. We have eye drops for her, but they really don't seem to help very much. I read that sometimes dogs have eyelashes that grow towards the eye and irritate it, but am not sure if this is the problem. I'm considering taking her for a second opinion, but don't want to have another vet do all the same expensive tests and would like to find a non-surgical option. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you do to give your dog relief?

Jack Russell with dry eye issues

If they have dry eye, then typically the only way to deal with it is through consistent home application of tear stimulants/ointments several times a day. Are you using it on a consistent basis? If not, try upping the number of times per day and see if that helps. Also, there are some prescription medicines "lacrostimulants" that can help with the tear productions.
Sometimes chronic dry eye can lead to corneal ulcers to it couldn't hurt to keep an eye on it like you have been doing.
