female JRT strains/squats to urinate for several minutes, repeatedly

by Claudia Reynolds

My 12.5 year old JR, Minnie, has been straining for several months during urination. When she first goes out, she is able to urinate normally, but continues to squat afterwards straining. On walks it can last 3 minutes and happen every few yards. In back yard she's squatting almost the entire time. I've had many tests done: UTI, crystals, blood work for diabetes, thyroid. X-rays for stones. Nothing showed up in any test. I'd really like to help her.

That's a tough one and I wish I could help. It sounds like you've been a great dog owner and been very thorough in trying to treat her. The only other thing I would do is look and see if there is a veterinary clinic attached to a veterinary school--they tend to have very advanced equipment. I would also see if there is a veterinarian who specializes in urology
