HELP!! I'm a new JRT owner and She's making me crazy

by Kim
(Chicago)

i rescued a 3 year-old JRT who had a broken pelvis in Dec. She is much better now and more energetic. I give her plenty of love and affection but when I am occupied, she becomes whiny and clingy. She sits under me literally and puts her paw (or chin) on my lap or my arm. What am I doing wrong? she has toys and I play with her almost every day for a few minutes. This is the first dog I've owned since I was a child and my first JRT... Please can someone help me??

Clingy JRT
by: Jamie

Welcome to the world of Jacks :-) Some are definitely like velcro. Mine is! It sounds like you are doing all the right things and she is just trying to pay you back in devotion.
One thing that might be good for her would be obedience classes. It's a good way to socialize her with other dogs plus she gets to learn fun tricks to boost her confidence. When she learns commands like "sit" and "stay" you can then work on increasing that distance and move further back each time. She will learn that you are not going to leave her, she will gain that confidence that you will be there after you release her.

Also, a Kong is a great toy to keep a dog occupied for awhile (if you need a break). You fill it with peanut butter and biscuits (or whatever - cottage cheese, etc). You can even freeze it so that it takes your Jack longer to get everything out. My Jack loves it.

Thank You!
by: Kim

Thank you all for responding. I feel so much better knowing that Bailey's behavior is typical. I was feeling like I wasn't showing her enough affection and God knows I love her to pieces! I don't her to feel neglected and it was making me crazy that all my petting, hugs, and kisses weren't enough. Thanks :-)

Help!
by: MichaelL65

I had to laugh when I read this. Welcome to life with a JRT! My Rusty is the same way. I think it is part of who they are as a breed. They are very social dogs and like to have their human close by. If I am working on the computer, I have a spot right next to me where he can lay down and I can pet him. I think you have to be patient and be persistent in showing your boundaries. Good luck!

Typical
by: Anonymous

Not to worry, she;s just being a typical JRT! They are very, very attached to their owner (by nature) and want to be with you all the time she's awake. Mine thinks she has a 'right' to curl up on my head and the pillow in bed and rst her head on mine or my neck. They are very aware that you are th big provider and show their appreciation by constant contact. And do't forget, you rescued her and helped her get rid of that pain she was in with the broken pelvis. It's her way of loving you and showing how much you mean to her. Enjoy it. It's such a loving relationship and JRT's are particularly this way.
