Jack Russell size

Hello

I recently got a 1-month old JR. Now she is 4 months, weights 4.5 lbs. Alot of people tell me she is small for her age and think that she is a miniature. However, the owners told me she is pure. What is the average size of JR at this age? Can they be smaller without being a miniature?
Thanks.

Jack Russell weight
by: Betty

That is too bad about the family that gave you your Jack. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your little guy. It sounds like he is starting to grow/gain weight so that is good. It might pay to find a vet that is experienced with Jack Russells. Not to scare you, but sometimes the smaller pups can have more health issues and it could help to have someone who is familiar with the breed.

Unfortunately you are right. It was not a reputable dealer, only a family who were eager to rid of the puppies as soon as possible. The vet I go to aren't too familiar with Jack Russells so she wasn't too well informed. They just said that for the size she is, the weight is fine. We recently measured her and she grew in length. (from 36 to 42 cm). But she is still relatively small. We hope that she will grow normally.

Reputable JRT dealer?
by: Betty

Are you sure you got your puppy from a reputable dealer? Most dealers wouldn't let a puppy leave that early from it's mother. There could very well be issues with growth/weight gain because of this. Different states and countries have laws about what age you can adopt a puppy. I would check with your vet and also check on the reputation of this dealer.
