What is the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America?

The JRT Club of America is known to be the highest authority in the country when it comes to this breed, but who are they and what do they do?

A Brief History of the JRT Club of America

The JRT Club of America was formed in 1976, with the express goal of preserving the unique characteristics that the Jack Russell displays. Foremost in their mind was the need to ensure that the Jack Russell Terrier was seen as a working dog and that it wasn’t sucked in by the various other organizations that wanted to standardize breeds based on looks alone.

Over the years the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America has grown into an organization with incredible power when it comes to the canine world. They have many thousands of members and rank alongside other organizations such as the American Kennel Club when it comes to influence – in fact, they once took on the American Kennel Club in a long running debate and won.

This debate was over the inclusion of the Jack Russell Terrier in the AKC’s breed registry – something that the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America was, and still is, vehemently opposed to. They argued that including the breed would destroy its working heritage and after a drawn out argument they won. The Parson Russell Terrier is now included in the AFC registry now though, which is effectively a standardized version of the Jack Russell Terrier.

What does the Jack Russell Club of America Do?

Aside from protecting the Jack Russell Terrier throughout the United States, the JRT Club of America also offers a number of other benefits to its members. Perhaps the most important of these though is the Jack Russell Terrier trials that it organizes on a regular basis. These events offer the owners of Jack Russells the perfect chance to meet each other, as well as to test their dogs against the best in the country. The flagship event is the JRTCA National Trial, where about 1,000 different Jack Russells compete in the largest single breed competition in the world!

Aside from the events, the JRT Club of America also offers valuable information to its members regarding important news. This is mainly to do with the different aspects of Jack Russell health, but often also includes articles about other topics as well – such as obedience, behavioral issues and true stories. It really is a must read for any serious Jack Russell Terrier enthusiast!

The final service that the Jack Russell Terrier Club of Americaprovides is a classified section for all Jack Russell fans to buy or sell any puppies or other dogs that they have or want. Because all of the advertisers are members of the JRTCA, then they can be trusted and therefore a buyer will always get exactly what they want! The dogs in this section can range from standard Jack Russells all the way through to champion dogs, meaning that there is always a dog to suit everyone’s budget as well.
