Jackson, my 12 yr old Jack Russell

by Yvonne
(Sydney Australia)

Our 12 yr old Jack Russell seems to be barking much louder now especially at night when the possums are around. He is always aware if we are going out (goes berserk when we come home. This I can sort of handle but there are other things like Dinner Time He has been fed but nearly drives us mad getting under our feet in kitchen looking for food. Last but not least he has started humping female dog in park (even though he was de-sexed many years ago. It is very embarrassing.

12 is not old for a JRT
by: JohndeSD

While senility might be a factor, 12 is really not that old for a Jack Russell. The popular formula we commonly use to estimate canine age (7 dog years for every human year) is an outdated estimation that was formulated in the 1930's when average US life expectancy was between 62-64 years (demystifies why FDR set Social Security benefits to begin at 65, doesn't it?), and was also based upon larger dog breeds that were popular in the US at the time.

Jack Russells and other small breeds between 15 and 35 pounds can live to be up to 20 years of age with proper care, although admittedly it is rare. The adjusted formula for smaller dogs averages about 5 years for every human year and many JRT's live to be 17 or a little older. It could be that your JRT has a hormonal imbalance due to age that might be corrected through diet or vitamins. Ask your vet

Jackson 12 yr old Jack Russell

Thanks for your input re Jackson. I don't see him really looking like 12 year old yet as he still likes to run when he gets off the lead and seems to still hear and see OK. I do give him treats most days but he never really knows when its enough! Is it common for most Jack Russells to have an annoying itch under their belly?

I don't know... maybe your dog is suffering from senility due to his age. I read recently 12 is just about the life expectancy of these little guys. Try a little tenderness, distraction with treats, ?
A little kindness in his sr. years will only make you feel better once he's gone... good luck!
