My JRT is 12 years old. In the past few months he has become very picky about eating. Sometimes he won't eat at all and then other times he eats quite a bit. He feels like he's lost weight. He has always been lean but now I can feel his spine on his back. Is it just old age or could it be something else?

Jack Russell not really eating

If this was a gradual process that happened over time and nothing else seems wrong, it's very likely just a behavioral phase that you shouldn't be too stressed about. However, I am concerned that your Jack has noticeably lost some weight. It can't hurt to get him checked out just in case.

The first thing I would do if you haven't already is eliminate most or all treats and snacks besides regular meal times and lessen the amounts at meal time just a tiny bit. Maybe shoot for 2.5 cups divided between two meals rather than 3 cups. See if this helps motivate the dog to attack meal time with more of a sense of urgency. If you can, schedule exercise sessions before meals to help build the appetite.
