we have a 1 and a half year old male jack russel terrier - pistol pete! twice in the last 6 months he has developed a sore near is butt hole. it eventually scabs over and heals. he does lick it and favors it so i believe it is sore for him. we feed him good food, and very little table scraps. he loves dingos and gets one every other day. any ideas would be great?

Jack with sore by butt
by: James

I'm wondering if Pistol Pete (love the name by the way!) has a ruptured anal gland. That happens when excess oil is trapped. Some dogs drag their butts on the ground to get relief. The vet can help you get the oil out and give you some antibiotics to put on. It's important to see the vet because sometimes the glands can be impacted. Also, putting a few tablespoons of canned pumpkin on your Jack's food to ramp up the fiber in his diet and help with the anal glands in the future.
Hope Pistol Pete is better soon!
