My 3 year old terrier bitch was adpopted by us when she was 2 and a half. In the last few weeks she has started barking at the slightest noise. I try to get her to go on her bed and be quiet and reward her when she settles down and is quiet. Am I doing the right thing?

I think that sounds like a good start! Have you tried obedience classes. That might help with her confidence and can also help when she starts to bark, you can have her "sit" or "down" and you can eventually work on "speak" or "quiet".
