JRT Skin Allergies
by: Anonymous

Our JRT started doing the same thing at about the age of 5. Our vet told us JRTs are prone to skin allergies, often from grass, which is why the problems chewing usually start with their paws. We had to change his food to a non-grain based variety, natural balance sweet potato and venison which helped a lot. You can give them one benedryl tablet in a bread or cheese ball, once in the morning, once at night to see if that helps. Benedryl is an antihistamine that helps reduce allergy symptoms. It's very inexpensive at any drug store or pharmacy. Don't give your dog any other type of allergy meds without talking to a vet, ours told us this kind/dose was safe to use with dogs. (not cats!) Eventually we had to start him on a drug called Atopica, it is a wonder-drug for this, a form of cyclosporin, but it is expensive. Our dog weighs 20 lbs and stays symptom free on one 50mg tablet every other day. Many thanks for your service to our country--maybe the organization that helped you get your servie dog could help connect you to an organization that could help with medication costs if necessary.

itchy russells.
by: john fom hull gb.

hello,

i am sorry your jrt is having problems with his skin.

my jrt Rosie is always chewing her feet, and I feel this is just a habit...however your russell may have fleas in which case a dog flea treatment from a pet store could do the trick...also I use t- tree ointment to calm down the itch...you can buy this from any health food stores.

Also check he is not allergic to the food you are feeding him...change his food!!
