Licking Elvis
by: MichaelL65

I had to laugh when I read this. My Rusty, a 2 Y/O JRT, licks my shaved head! He seems to like it, and to be honest, I love it! I always hated a dog licking me when I was younger, but now I have come to realize that it must be a bonding thing. He also licks my hands and when he wants to go out, he nibbles on them and tries to drag me to the door! I love my Jack!

Both our JRT and JRTxChi lick. Mia will always lick my legs and feet at night before going to bed - Izzy on the other hand is a very keen hand licker! In fact she does so very methodically - up and down and in-between fingers until they are all done - sometimes she'll revisit a patch before moving onto the other hand.
Mia the JRT is quite passionate about licking - I thought it might have been something to do with salt initially - but I do believe it is a bonding and affection giving activity. I like it actually but others sometimes find it annoying and unhygienic! If you have dogs living in your house with you you have to accept it is never going to be a sterile environment and as the kids are no longer small and rolling around on the floor I am really not too hung up about it - whereas before we had our own dogs I hated the thought of the associated 'germs' ! sensible precautions of course but I will never go OTT.
If your dog licks you he is being your friend - as if you needed that assurance eh!?

Elvis, A hunk of burning love!
by: CeeCee

Love the Christmas gear, Elvis definitely wearing his holiday best :-)
Usually dogs learn about licking in puppyhood from his mother. The mother uses her tongue sort of like a washcloth. And puppies lick their littermates for a variety of reasons.

Dogs that lick their owners do it as a sign of affection. They also do it as a sign of submission that you are the pack leader as well as to get attention and approval. Dogs in a household with more pets often manifest the need to secure the affection of the master. Licking can be the strategy of one dog wanting to get an edge over the other pet for the master’s affection.

My Jack did the same which is why I researched it a little. Makes sense because I do have another (not a Jack) dog. Knowing why he does it makes it very endearing whereas before I found it a little annoying/wet.
