older dog exercise

by Kathy

Hi there, I have a 14.5 year old jack russel bitch who is very healthy. I try to walk her 5 miles every other day and walk around the block in between longer walks. Is this too much for her? As recently I have to walk really slow when we're out, she seems to have lost her zest for walkies!!

walking older Jacks

You might want to consider scaling back the walks. At her age, your JRT is in it more for the stimulation and people time she gets with you along the walks. If you continue to walk her for that distance, slow down the pace and give her plenty of rest breaks with water and and a few treats.

14.5 years Walking too much?

I do not know. I would say, since she is slowing down, and not all that excited to do walkies, chances are she's telling you she doesn't want to. You've done a phenomenal thing walking this long this much. It may not hurt to back off some and see how she does. Also, check with her VET to see if a little arthritis med might be called for. GREAT JOB and best of luck!
