Our Jack Russell has developed breathing problems

by Sue
(Michigan)

Our 13 year old Jack Russell has always been an active dog. She still does lots of running and hunting, but has started having some changes in her breathing at times. She has been sneezing a lot, snorting, and also having some wheezing at times. I took her to our vet and he gave her a steroid shot and antibiotics, which helped for 2 weeks and then the symptoms returned. Now I am noticing some spots of bloody mucus at times on the sheet where she sleeps. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Is it her age, or allergy?

Tessie update NEW
by: Anonymous

I did take Tessie to a different Vet who did a through exam on her. They did find a heart murmur and put her on medication for that. They xrayed her sinus cavity and could see no signs of any deformities there. She continues having the off and on breathing issues, panting, sneezing, left nostril and eye running and sometimes blood from left nostril. She will be 15 this summer, so we don't want to put her through a bunch of expensive tests at this time of her life. She gets pampered and spoiled and loved, and she is happy and doesn't seem to be in pain.

Heart murmer? NEW
by: Anonymous

We have a 14 year old jrt...1 year ago she started wheezing after running, hacking, licking crazy things and sneezing. Our vet said she has a heart murmer, which will continue to get worse as she ages. I would talk with your vet about this possibilty.

symptoms continue to get worse NEW
by: Anonymous

Our little Tessie seems be be continuing to get worse with these breathing symptoms. last weekend she started having thick clear mucus coming from her left nostril, sometimes with a tinge of blood in it. This is off and on. She seems to have some trouble with her sinus's, and after drinking or eating she will snort or sneeze and wheeze like it went into her sinus area. Last night a different symptom, which she has never done before in her 13 years: she took a roll of toilet paper and had eating some of eat all around the edges. I think she is trying to "help" whatever is going in inside her. I am afraid it may be a tumor or cancer in her sinus, head or throat. Our vet did not want to do any tests or xrays on her. Does anyone have any idea what it could be, or if there is anything we can do to help her?
