Sasha is my 10 year old JRT we moved 6 years ago from somewhere with a lovely walk to an area where there is only a playing field for her to have her exercise. She doesn't want to play for any longer than she wants to play and I am worried that this may not be long enough anymore. I can no longer, due to illness, get on the floor and play with her with a ball like I used to. Do JRT's go off exercise for too long when they are 10 and over?

Jack Russell not playing as much
by: Sandra

As dogs get older they tend to slow down a bit - just like us humans! I wouldn't worry about the lack of exercise too much as long as she is getting two decent walks a day. Have your heard of a Kong? They are a great way to give a dog something to do and mental exercise at the same time. It's a hard rubber toy that you fill with peanut butter and dog biscuits (you can also freeze it so that it takes longer for them to finish it). And that way you don't have to worry about being on the floor but at the same dog your Jack is getting mental exercise.

If you are really concerned you can always hire a dog walker to come and walk/play with her (if you can afford that). Or drop her off at a doggie day care for one afternoon a week so she could be around other dogs and have a chance to run around.

However, if your jack seems happy and content and not restless then I wouldn't worry too much.
