Puppy can't breathe

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can, Tootsie who is a Jack Russell had 6 puppies 8 days ago (this is her first litter) and all seemed fine. They were all feeding ok and putting on weight nicely, we spoke with the vet who didn't seem to think there was any reason to visit.

Yesterday one puppy seemed to be drinking less than the rest, she was the first born but the smallest of the litter and the others seem to be pushing her out of the way a bit. Today she seems unable to breathe and constantly has her mouth open. I have fed her with lactol milk as I initially thought she may just be weak from not feeding as much.

I plan to take her to the vet tomorrow but just wondered if anyone had any advice for today

Many thanks

Tracey

Jack Russell puppy

Geez, that's a bummer. I'm really really sorry to hear about the puppy.
Did your vet do an autopsy to see if there was a cause? I only ask because sometimes there could be an infection that the Mother or other pups could have. It also doesn't hurt to have the Mother checked out.
The Mother does have a number in her head of how many dogs are there and she does keep count. Hopefully she is busy caring for the other puppies and is distracted by that. I would keep an eye on her though. She may start looking for the missing puppy.

Thank you for your help
by: Tracey

Steven Thank You so much for your help, we took her to the emergency vet and sadly she passed away.

They said her stomach was bloated and her milk wasn't digesting, it may have been because she drank too much milk to quickly or because her stomach wasn't developed properly.

I am now concerned for Toots, as this is her first litter do you think she will now be ok having lost one? I know she knows how many she had and am sure she counts them checking they are all there. I am worried she will come depressed do you know if dogs react like this

Jack Russell newborn trouble breathing

Have you tried cleaning out nasal passage ways with a syringe? Make sure you keep the puppy warm (heat lamp if necessary)and stroke/massage it to stimulate her - you can even massage with a warm wet towel to stimulate the mother's tongue.

Good luck! Hope the puppy gets well soon!
