ROCKY

ROCKY IS OUR 12 YEAR OLD JRT AND WE LOVE HIM VERY MUCH. NEARLY 2 YEARS AGO, HE HAD SURGERY TO REMOVE BLADDER STONES AND HE HAS NOT BEEN THE SAME SINCE. IN ADDITION TO BLADDER CONTROL ISSUES, HE DEVELOPED AN AGGRESSIVE ATTITUDE WITH US THAT WAS NEVER SEEN PRIOR TO THE SURGERY. OUR VET BELIEVES HE POSSIBLY HAS A BRAIN TUMOR. WE HAVE BEEN MANAGING HIS BEHAVIORAL CHANGES (WHICH THE VET BELIEVES ARE DUE TO PAIN) WITH MILD PAIN MEDICATION AND STEROIDS. TO ADD TO ALL OF THESE ISSUES, LAST NIGHT HE EITHER FELL OR JUMPED OFF OUR BED AND INJURED HIMSELF. THE VET CONFIRMED THAT HE TORE A LIGAMENT IN HIS RIGHT REAR LEG. SHE RECOMMENDED SURGERY BUT ALSO SEEMS TO THINK THAT WITH ABOUT 10 DAYS OF INACTIVITY AND REST, IT MIGHT HEAL ITSELF. CAN THIS BE TRUE? ALSO, EVEN THOUGH IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO THINK ABOUT, SINCE HIS QUALITY OF LIFE SEEMS TO BE DETERIORATING, IS IT TIME TO THINK ABOUT SAYING GOOD BYE?

JRT declining health NEW
by: William

I'm so very sorry to hear about Rocky's declining health. Having had something similar in our JRT I know how tough it is. Usually dogs that are suddenly aggressive are usually in some sort of pain. It does sound like Rocky has some health issues that are not visible to the human eye. I really hope it's not a brain tumor! I personally think waiting out an injury is the best thing to do. Surgery puts an older dog at risk and in the end might not make things better. To be honest, you will be the one to know best about when to let Rocky go. The rule of thumb is that the dogs quality of life has declined so much that they no longer wag their tail, do not want to eat or drink or they are in a tremendous amount of pain. It brings a tear to my eye knowing that you are going through this having just suffered through it myself. You will get through this. I'm pulling for Rocky that he makes a speedy recovery!
