Hi

My Parsons Jack Russell is 2.5 years old and she has just started running away and not coming back when on walks - the other day she ran all the way home luckily I was in and let her in! any ideas why she has all of a sudden started doing this? she has got so much energy the thought of havnig to walk her always on the lead will kill her!

thanks very much

JRT running away NEW
by: Frank

Running away behavior satisfies many of your Jack Russell's instincts and is a completely natural thing to do, however it is also dangerous in today's fast paced world.
A few musts to keep your dog from running away:
*You need to make sure you are providing a comfortable place for your Jack to rest that is shaded from the elements.
*You still need some bonding time with your pup including some leash time and some mental stimulation - like a Kong filled with peanut butter and biscuits.
*Interesting toys in the yard.
*Obedience training is the key, it is absolutely essential for any healthy owner-dog relationship. Not only does obedience training provide fantastic stimulation for your dog but also sets you up as the respected and always fair leader in the relationship you share together.
*Get your dog microchipped!
*If you are away for long periods of time, think about employing a dog walker to make your Jack's day a bit more interesting.
*Think about fencing in your yard.
