Swimming

Hi I have a 6 1/2 month JRT who loves play play with water, ex garden hose, sprinkler basicly anything that sprays water he loves. Except when I take him to the beach he doesn't want to go swimming :( if you carry him out to deeper water and let him go he just swims to shore. Is there anyway to get him to enjoy swimming?

Swimming NEW
by: Lesley

We live in a very hot part of the world - at least three months of the year, days consistently 90 -100 degrees plus. We have a pool but our JRT was timid and panicky in the water. On vet's advice, we bought him a little doggie life jacket which straps twice around his belly and a strap around his neck. He is much more confident in the water now, and on hot days, he races me out to the pool. He gets very excited when he sees that I am ready to take him in.
The life jacket makes him that little bit more buoyant and he sits up a little bit higher in the water. I could see immediately that he felt a lot more relaxed and didn't have to work quite as hard to keep himself afloat.

try throwing something?
by: Anonymous

my JR loves the water but wont just jump in and swim, he waits in the water until you throw something for him to fetch (usually stick) which he then swims to collect and then waits for you to throw it again. He will play this game for hours and as soon as he hears/smells water he will sprint off towards it and wait to play. So maybe try throwing something that your dog enjoys to fetch, just a little in front of him at first until he builds his confidence in the water.
