We have had our male Jack Russell (age about 4) for about 13 months. He came from a shelter. He is very sweet and submissive in every way except recently he has snapped and growled when touched while he is asleep. What can we do?

Let sleeping dogs lie

Usually a growl is a warning done out of fear. Given your Jack's background, maybe she has a few issues about being woken up when sleeping. If this is the only time you see this, I would just make a mental note not to disturb her when she is sleeping. However, if she sleeps on your bed, then I would ban her fron it. If you see growling in other areas though then you need to immediately address it.
