Thunderstorm Terror

My 7-year old Jack has always been terrified of thunderstorms, but for the last year her fear has gotten worse. We had a bad storm early this morning and I seriously thought she was in danger of having a heart attack!

I received a prescription from her vet for Acepromazine but it has no effect, and after doing a little research I now realize why. I will be speaking to her vet about why Ace is not the kind of drug Hope needs, but would like some advice on how to handle this without coming across as "questioning her expertise". I would also like to know what you have found the best drug to be for this situation that will actually ease her fear instead of masking it in order to make ME feel better.

Thank you very much!

We also have a Jack Russell with storm terror, ACE is not good for this problem as it heightens the dogs senses and hearing ability. we were told by a vet to give the dog a 2mg Valium tablet when you first hear a storm coming, it should take about 15 minutes to take effect and can last up to 8 hours. It doesn't knock them out it just quietens the down.

I have had Jacks for over twelve years and have operated my non profit JRT rescue for almost seven years now and I have lived in your shoes. I STRONGLY reccommend getting a "THUNDERSHIRT". Here is the link as to How it works. Can be purchased at Petco and Petsmart for about $40.00 It is used for a variety of behaviors. I can honestly say that I haven't heard anyone say they didn't work. Granted maybe some were only helped somewhat but in your position I would think a little is better than none.

Possibly the reason the Ace didn't work is because Ace needs to be given well before their adreniline is elevated.

If you do get a Thundershirt please give an update after you've used it.
