To Old To Have Puppies?
by: Robbin's Rescued Russells

My first suggestion is to spay your bitch and neuter the male dog. If she was in heat and casme in contact with this male or any other intact males, it is possible that she may become inpregnated. My fear for your dog being eleven years old and not spayed would be that she could get Pyrometria. This disease can affect female dogs at a very young age. As early as shortly after their first "heat cycle". For information about Pyrometria please visit this link: http://www.vetinfo.com/canine-pyometra-uterus-infection-in-dogs.html This disease is often fatal if medical help has not been sought at the very onset of this disease. I would check with your veternarian and ask about having her spayed. At eleven years old your veterinarian may have concerns about "putting her under" at that age. There are many health benefits that your dog can benefit from by being spayed. In case your bitch is going to whelp, the gestation period for a dog is roughly sixty three days. If your bitch does have puppies PLEASE when they get new homes please express the importance of spaying and neutering their pets.
