two year old jack russell going blind

we just learned our two year old is going blind , we have made an appointment with the eye clinic because we were told medication can prolong it if its not too progressed , we will only know that when he has the eye test . Is it a good worthwhile treatment? we're sad and worried , he's a great dog who loves to play fetch

Jack going blind
by: Robert

So sorry to hear about your Jack. We went through a similar thing with ours. She had an issue with her retinas. I think medication is a matter of preference. We chose to use medication and I think it helped a bit (she's now completely blind). The main reason we did it was we wanted to give her extra time to learn and map our house and teach her some coping mechanisms, as well as ourselves too!
Here is a website that we found really helpful:
http://www.blinddogs.net/blind_dog_tips.html

And don't worry about fetching, there are some great balls out there - listed on that website. I happen to work with kids with disabilities and bought a ball that we use with kids who are blind - a ball that beeps- and my Jack loves that.

I know it's a scary diagnosis but after an adjustment period my Jack is still happy and enjoying life!
