walking delema

When ever I walk or ride my bike with my JRT she becomes very anxious on the way back to the car, unless I go to town and dont retrace my steps. She really pulls and is unable to focus on me or even mother nature! I adopted her about 6 months ago she is almost 2 and is a great dog! I just dont know how to help her. Tried stopping until she settles which she just wont do, she"ll sit by my side until my first step then fixation time again and again.I need some advice because the problem is begining to affect my attitude toward our exersize time and I feel bad.

Response to my walking delema
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the great advice. I took my jrt on a bike ride today and again heading back to the car she was really pulling but after 2 1/2 miles and the trip back to the car she wasnt pulling (tired maybe)! I have tried bringing here fav. treats and she doesnt really pay attention to them. She is a complete food hog any other time . walks are usually 45min.plus. My thought is if I reward her when we get back to the car with treats am I not enforcing her negative drive to get back ? I will keep working with the treats and walking maybe I'll bike then go for a walk and see how that goes. Thanks again for those great responses!

Walking

Try bringing some of her favorite treats and try a Martindale collar they tighten around her neck without choking her and it is really a great tool for walking I use those collars on all of my dogs I have 2 Jacks and I walk them together and I never have a problem.

treats could work

Try using her favorite treats, like dried liver or cooked chicken to incourage her to follow you.
Hopefully what ever has frightened her in the past will be overcome, it must have been traumatic for her.
positive reinforement rewards are the best way to overcome fear. But need to be taken slowly step by step and lots of gooing and cooing with it. When she gets back in the car reward her well.
Make sure you set enough time aside for the first few times you try this.
PS how long is the walk, maybe she also needs to be a bit more tired out, a good 30 - 40 mins .
My Jack doesnt like other dogs, so i try to exercise her first then she is calmer if we aproach other dogs for socialisation. (Which I never give up trying)
