When to know it's time

by Rhonda Lee

Hi, I have an 18 year old Jack Russell that has had bad discs for several years. The vet has off and on put her on steroids and a muscle relaxer. Several months ago she seemed to be in pain so we took her back and he did another round of the meds. Every time he has done a kidney test that came back fine. But her back legs are giving out more each day. She is eating good, drinking water, and going outside for bathroom but when she gets up and walks her legs are just giving in on her. If we get keys she still gets excited and wants to ride. But other than that she is laying down. She has never slept anywhere but with us or near us. Yesterday she started laying in the kitchen floor alone and doesn't want to come in living room. She doesn't seem to be in pain This is breaking my heart but I don't want to prolong anything for her. I don't know what to do. I can barely see to type from tears. Anyone had any experience with this. All replies will be so appreciated. Good bless!
Rhonda

Jrt
by: Aj

Hello there, my heart goes out to you! I have a Jack Russell who is coming up on 10 in September and the thought of him not being in my life absolutely devastates me. I can’t stand the thought of my baby being in any pain and I know when he is I will take him to the vet and have him give the peace that he deserves.
I always said that we treat our animals with more dignity than our human loved ones. Doesnt matter if they lived a long full life it still hurts like hell when they go. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. Good luck.

All dogs go to Heaven
by: Anonymous

God may get unhappy with people but he loves his animal creations...looking into a beloved pet's eyes, you can see their soul...I have had to have a vet put my dogs and cats to sleep over past 75 years...it's never an easy choice and I also cried like a baby f or many days...but in my heart knowing that they are with God makes it easier. My little JRT is only 8 years old and I hope to be able to take care of him till the end, but I have put a trust fund together, so if I go first he will got to a foundation that will take care of him for the rest of his life. God Bless you and your JRT

Worried about older Jack Russell Terrier
by: julie

HI Rhonda,
It sounds like your Jack Russell Terrier has lived a wonderful long life. Does she seem happy and comfortable most of the time besides her physical ailments? Did the vet say whether she has neuropathy in her legs? There are devices that can be attached to dogs to assist them in moving around if it is uncomfortable for them to do so without help. There are also natural pain relievers that people are looking into for their pets such as cbd oil. Knowing what to do with your pet when they are 18 is such a personal decision, but I can tell you love your JRT dearly and will make a decision that is best for your dog/family.
