Jack Russell shaking/coughing
by: Rebecca

Can you give us some more details about when the shaking and coughing all started and when it happens (e.g., night, day, after eating, etc). And when the breathing noise happens, what does it sound like. Sometimes the breathing noise could be a reverse cough or tracheal collapse (which could also explain the shaking) - both of which are non life threatening. Try googling these things and see what you find and if it describes your Jack - let us know what you find out!

shaking

He may possibly have white shaker (or shaking) dog syndrome. I found this simple answer on the web,you might google for more info:

"White Shaker Syndrome is known medically as idiopathic (unknown cause) Tremor Syndrome. It causes inflammation of the central nervous system that is responsive to steroids. It is commonly noted in small breeds with white hair coats.

It more commonly occurs in younger dogs though. My JR, also 9 yrs, had a severe case (though I am not totally sure that this is what he has - it is difficult to diagnose) He couldn't even walk but responded well to Prednisone, which he no longer takes. I think stress aggravates it and my vet suggested 500 mg of fish oil twice a day and so far so good. I would suggest a visit to a vet asap who might have some experience with this disorder.
