Zipper

My neutered Jack Russell, male almost 11 years old, while lying on the floor or chair growls at nothing. There seems to be no stimulus. The house is quiet, no cats, no squirrels. It is non-aggressive. I can pet him, hold him, rub him, no problem. Is he just bored and this is how he shows it?

Jack barking at nothing
by: Pat

Sometimes as dogs get older they see, hear and smell things differently. Barking at nothing is not uncommon for dogs who are over a certain age. It wouldn't hurt to have your vet check him it just in case it's something else like arthritis. However, maybe a little mental stimulation like exercise or a change in walking routes to help get the juices flowing a bit couldn't hurt either.
